Syllabus

Unit 1

Solidification of metals :

Solidification of metals, Crystallisation, Crystal and amorphous structures, different types of bonds in metals, Crystallography. Stability and metastability of metals. Different mechanical properties of metals and other engineering materials such as strength, hardness, elasticity, plasticity, malleability, ductility, creep, and fatigue. Introduction to industrial metals, steels, and prevailing manufacturing methods.

Unit 2

Cooling curves :

Cooling curves, Isomorphous, Utectic, Eutectoid, Eutectoid solid solution, Peritectic and other phase diagrams. Alloying, characteristics of alloying elements, Iron–Carbon phase diagram, T-T-T diagrams, Types of Cast Iron, Types of Stainless Steels, Elastic, anelastic, and viscoelastic behavior.

Unit 3

Module-3 :

UNIT 3: Heat treatment of metals based on phase diagram and T-T-T Diagram, bulk heat treatments, surface heat treatments, Case carburising, types of annealing, normalising, spherodising. Phase transformations such as pearlite, cementite, austenite, troostite, bainite, hard and soft martensite. Laser hardening, cyaniding, boriding, nitriding, flame hardening, ion implantation. Heat treatment cycles. Metallographic studies using optical and electron microscopes.

Destructive and non-destructive testing methods :

UNIT 4: Destructive and non-destructive testing methods, including tensile tests, compression tests, shear tests, bend tests, hardness tests, impact tests, fatigue tests, and hardenability tests. Fracture analysis. NDT Methods. Properties of steels, aluminium and its alloys, copper and its alloys, manganese and its alloys, chromium and its alloys, nickel and its alloys.

Unit 5

Chemical analysis :

Chemical analysis of different alloying elements in commercial metals, including C, Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn, Mg, S, P, Co, and Mo. Different chemical reagents and equipment used for analysis, including volumetric and gravimetric analysis, spot tests, colorimetric methods, and optical and spectrophotometric analysis.
